The town of Vyšší Brod is situated on the Vltava River at the easternmost height of the Šumava Mountains (the surrounding area is called Vyšebrodsko) and according to the location of the village core it is the southernmost village in the Czech Republic.
It is very attractive for tourists. There is the Cistercian Vyšebrod Monastery, which also houses the Postal Museum, and the Dean’s Church of St. Bartholomew. The historic centre of the town is a town conservation area. Thanks to the Lipno River, a virtually permanently navigable section of the Vltava River begins here. Paddlers begin their pilgrimage on the Vltava River here, all the way to Zlatá Koruna or Boršov nad Vltavou.
In the village of Vyšší Brod, the so-called Šumava cycling trail begins, which runs along the left bank of the Vltava through Čertova Stena and Loučovice to the dam of the Lipno dam. From there it continues along the left bank of the Lipno River to Nová Pec and into the depths of the Šumava National Park.
