History

The castle was first mentioned in writing in 1250. It was founded by the son of Vítek of Prčice from the Vítkov family. The small town in the castle’s foothills was founded in 1262 by Petr Vok of Rožmberk. Earlier, however, there was a settlement on the trade route leading from Český Krumlov over the border passes to Linz and further south in the area of the lower Vltava ford. Rožmberk nad Vltavou is linked to the important noble family of Rožmberk, who settled the town and its surroundings and brought prosperity to the region through their activities, as evidenced by the town status that was granted to Rožmberk in the past and now in 2006 the title of town was restored. In 1620 the Rožmberk estate fell to the French aristocracy of the Buquoy family.

Sights

  • Rožmberk Castle – a large castle complex on a promontory above the Vltava River. Its original early Gothic part – the so-called Upper Castle from the 13th century – was no longer maintained after a fire in 1522. Only the circular tower of the Jacobínka has been preserved. Today’s core of the castle is the so-called Lower Castle. Later it was rebuilt, first in the Gothic style, at the beginning of the 16th century in the Renaissance style, and in the 19th century it was again rebuilt. In the place of the original Upper Castle stands the so-called New Castle – a residential building from the 19th century.
  • Synagogue, old and new Jewish cemetery.
  • St. Nicholas Church, on the square, sometimes also referred to as St. Mary’s Church – a valuable Gothic building from 1271, rebuilt in the 15th century to its present form. The presbytery has a circular rib vault from 1488, the three-bay nave has a net vault from 1583. The sacristy portal dates from 1510. The altar of the church is early Baroque. Charles Bonaventure Buquoy was buried in this church in 1621.
  • Remains of the town fortifications.
  • Town Hall – No. 74. The core of the building dates from the 15th century, the facade was completed in the 19th century.
  • The fountain and the statue of St. John of Nepomuk in the square.
